With 5,000 people moving here each month, somebody had to spill the beans!

March 13, 2009

We’re 30 hours away from the March 2009 Living in Las Vegas Podcast Listener Meetup.  That’s the good news.

What’s the bad news?

Well, I’d say it has to do with the attendees.  I don’t really know how many people will be joining us at the Red Rock Casino and Hotel tomorrow at 6PM, but from the few folks who’ve contacted me, it could be a rough crowd.

For example:

  • A Germany from Hong Kong: Huh?  Is that even possible?  Are there no direct flights from Berlin?
  • A Couple of Foreigners: Have you ever been to Michigan?  It’s too damn cold there.  How can somebody with any sense live there?  What could possibly be on their minds?
  • Two Podcast Hosts: Okay. . .these two folks are pretty nice.  Buy them a drink. They’re thirsty.
  • A Birthday-Boy Web Stud: Into HTML?  Dig CSS?  Then a good time will be had by all you.
  • A Real-Life Ph.D.  And believe me when I say Ph.D doesn’t stand for what you think it does.  Oh sure, it’s “official”.  But I’m pretty sure it should stands for Pretty hard.  Drinker.

Frightening, right?  Who knows what kind of craziness will ensue.  So, if you want my advice, I’d say. . .join us.  Not so much because it’ll be a good time.  I just need a witness in the event things get a little out of hand.

March 10, 2009

For those of you who’ve been asking where they could see the video of our recent Live Video Streaming episode (#65 Living the Loft Lifestyle in Las Vegas), I’ve just developed a brand-spanking new video player on our homepage which features about 13 minutes from our 1 hour 21 minute show.

Stop on by and take a look!  It’s pretty cool.

During the process of creating this video clip, it became clear that trying to encode an 82 minute video into something downloadable was not going to happen.  The original file was 18GB.  The first-cut .mp4 was. . .get this. . .a hard drive-saving 900MB.  As a result, we have a new video offering up our sleeves that will be fun and a bit more size sensitive. More on that later.

Until than, enjoy the video!

(Oh, one more thing. . .I just received our first international confirmation for this Saturday’s LiLV Listener Meet Up at the Red Rock Casino!  Don’t leave JR (from Germany) wondering what’s what in Las Vegas!  Be sure to come out and join us!)

March 4, 2009

With a thankful tip of the hat to Cheryl [contributors page] for her recon work, along with a further hat tip to Rob and Lois [friends page] for moving things along, the next Living in Las Vegas Podcast Listener Meet Up is officially ON for Saturday, March 14th!

To change things up a bit, the March Meet Up will take place at the nicest “locals” casino in the Las Vegas Valley: the $950M Red Rock Hotel and Casino. (No, not Whitney Villa. . .we’ve not been properly sanctioned for gaming.)  Here’s the scoop:

Location: Red Rock Casino and Hotel
Gathering Spot: Swanky* Bar by the hotel lobby (found in the center of the circular area adjacent to the lobby itself [pdf])
Where Should I Park? East Valet or East Parking Garage
Date: Saturday, March 14
Time: 6PM
Attire: Only if you want to get in
Calendar: Click here to add to your calendar

Melissa and I are looking forward to seeing y’all again!  It’s been too long between good times with LiLV listeners!  For those thinking about coming out for the first time, our first gathering was awesome, our second was spoooooky, and our third will be uber-groovy as well.  Come on out and join the fun!  As an added bonus, I’ll be sure to share how I went from Scott Whitney, civilian to Lord Scott Whitney.  (It’s good to be the king. . .er. . .lord.)

See you on March 14th!  And feel free to invite a friend.

* “Swanky” is Cheryl’s description.

March 3, 2009

Melissa and I have returned from seven beautiful days in Playa del Carmen, found about 30 or so miles south of Cancun.  I got to tell you, there is something quite enjoyable about spending a week in an all-inclusive hotel drinking, eating, lounging, swimming and then drinking some more.  (For those interested, we stayed at Valentin Imperial Maya.)  Besides a nice tan, I brought home a new appreciation for the power of a great swim-up bar.  (I’ve also confirmed that Melissa and Sarah can shooooooooooooooop.  I mean really, how long can you look at a $8 wrap and not just decide ‘yes’ or ‘no’?!?)

Before our journey into vacationland, a request for the next Living in Las Vegas Listener Meetup came up during our live video podcast.  Cheryl has done some recon and I’ll post the details tomorrow.

Until then, it’s great to be back!

October 7, 2008

For all the ghouls and goblins planning to join us for the October Listener Meetup, which will include a trip to The Asylum haunted house, we will be meeting at 6:30PM at Gordon Biersch in Summerlin.  The plan is to have a couple drinks then head on over for the spooky part of the evening.  After we all collectively listen to Melissa scream bloody murder for 15-20 minutes, we’ll decide upon a place to continue the evening’s festivities.

Meeting Location: Gordon Biersch (750 S. Rampart Blvd, 702.487.6463)
Date: Saturday, October 11, 2008
Time: 6:30PM for drinks
Attire: Depends (that is, if you have a weak bladder)

As always, Melissa and I are looking forward to another great time with our listeners!

See you on Saturday!

September 18, 2008

scaryblog By popular demand, we’ve decided to organize our second LiLV Listener Meetup for Saturday, October 11, 2008.  Now this isn’t going to be just some simple, sit-around-and-drink meetup. . .no, no, no. . .we’ve already rode that pony.  Instead, it’s going to be three-Three-THREE things in one:

  1. Sit around and drink (a bit, okay okay, why ruin a good thing)

  2. Visit “The Asylum”, reportedly a VERY scary haunted house in Summerlin

  3. Eat, Drink and be Scary Merry at a dining/drinking establishment to be named later

If you’re wondering about item #2, here’s the scoop:  one of our listener’s favorite episodes continues to be the Hotel Fear show, which primarily features Melissa screaming like a banshee for 20+ minutes.  (The woman has pipes.)  A week or so ago, I received an email, which lead to a phone call with the folks who run Hotel Fear and The Asylum.

Of course, I expected they wanted to hire Melissa as a professional screamer.

But no, that wasn’t it.  Instead, to my surprise, they told me that they loved the show so much that they wanted to offer us 10 tickets to experience The Asylum, at no charge

Free stuff?  I love free stuff.  And so understandably, I accepted their offer.

As I type this, four of those tickets are already spoken for.  If you’d like to be one of the other six victims to join us as we go Screaming Through Summerlin, and you know your calendar is open for such fun, be one of the first six people to email me at lilvscreamer@livinginlv.com and I’ll put you on the free-ticket list.  (Others are welcomed to join us of course, but I can only comped the first six folks.)

Remember, you want to make sure you’re available on OCTOBER 11, 2008 before requesting the free ticket.

We’ll finalize the time in another post but I’m guessing we’ll first meet around 6PM(ish) for drinks and enter The Asylum at 7:30PM(ish).

One final thing–we will be recording our experience for a LiLV podcast so if you don’t want your friends to know you’re a screamer (Mark G?), you may not want to get tickets. . .but we’d love to have you join us for drinks and dinner!

August 16, 2008

The first ever Living in Las Vegas Listener Meet Up was a GREAT SUCCESS!!  As I walked out to Trader Vic’s outside patio, I was immediately greeted by Tim and Nanette (from the For Whatever Reason Podcast).  A few minutes later, David and Alicia (local LVers) joined us and there seemed to be a steady flow of folks joining us for drinks, laughs and storytelling.

MeetUP2 We’ll talk more about the meetup on the next podcast (lots of audio clips and video, though the video might not make it on the site) but to put a fine point on how much fun we had. . .all the Las Vegas locals hung around until late in the evening (midnight, I think). . .at which point we decided to EXTEND the party to today!  Rich, Cheryl, David, Alicia, Don and Jan will be joining Melissa and me at the Whitney Villa for more fun!

August 7, 2008

It is well established that I believe the nectar of the Gods is Tanqueray and Tonic. . .a refreshing drink that proves there is hope for all of mankind.  However, I will be zigging when I normally zag when it comes to libation ingestion when joining the folks at the LiLV Listener Meet Up taking place on August 15, 5PM, at Trader Vic’s.  I would invite those that join us to try something not found at your typical lounge.

My recommendation?  Trader Vic’s Kava Bowl. You got to love a drink that serves four in a communal bowl and features a variety of rums, liquors and fruit juice.

See you in about a week!

August 4, 2008

Okay, here’s the scoop.  Many of the folks who emailed us at meetup@livinginlv.com suggested our gathering should take place at the Whitney Villa.  I think this is a great idea(!). . .and we were moving toward making that happen when we got word that some of our guest’s ankle monitors would not let them travel to our neck of the woods.

Maybe next time, Troy.  (I keed, I keed.)

Anywho, the day with the most votes turned out to be Friday, August 15th.  This works well–it gives us a chance to meet but doesn’t cut into what may be the last night in Las Vegas (Saturday) for many of the folks attending the New Media Expo.  here’s the scoop:

Location: Trader Vic’s (in The Miracle Mile Shopping Center, attached to Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino)
Date: Friday, August 15
Time: 5PM
Attire: Probably a good idea

Melissa and I are looking forward to meeting y’all!  And remember, there’s a gift waiting for the first 10 people who introduce him/herself to me OR my Naughty Jelly Sweet!!

July 16, 2008

I’m telling you, our listeners are a lovely bunch of coconuts!  As I mentioned in episode 58, we were thinking about organizing an informal meet up with our listeners in conjunction with the upcoming New Media Expo.   Based upon the personal emails I received, we’d be crazy NOT to meet with some of the nicest people I’ve ever heard from!

We’ll pick a day (more like early evening) soon.  And to show my appreciation, I’ve decided that I’ve got a little gift set aside for the first ten LiLV listeners who shake my hand and introduce himself/herself.  (And no, the gift does not require that you buy me a drink. . .that would be uncalled for, not something I would ever expect, and I drink Tanqueray and Tonic.)

The Expo is happening from August 14-16.  My session is on the Thursday the 14th but I’m open to meet any day/night.  For those interested in joining us for a drink or two, how about sending an email to meetup@livinginlv.com and tell me what night works for you.  Based upon the majority, we’ll post a date/time on the website.

Stay tuned!
