With 5,000 people moving here each month, somebody had to spill the beans!

August 22, 2011

In what began as an idea in the LiLV Live Chat Room has turned into our next Living in Las Vegas Podcast / Vegas Video Network Viewer Meetup!!!

This year’s Meetup takes place at one of our favorite bars in Las Vegas — RHUMBAR at The Mirage. The folks at RHUMBAR have set aside an area just for our gathering!

As an added bonus, by RSVP’ing (see below for instructions), your first drink is on us!!

Anybody can stop by. To get on the list for your **free drink**, please RSVP Facebook AND send an email with a list of attendees (each of whom should have their own email address) to meetup@vegasvideonetwork.com.

These meetups are a BLAST. We’ve been having them since 2006 and they are always a great time to have a drink, meet old friends, and make new friends.

We will be located in the North-East corner of the outside lounge. There should be a large Vegas Video Network banner near us. And while the time of the event says 4-7PM on the Facebook page, you can better believe many of us will be there long after 7PM!

See you there!!!

I’ve been working with Ted Newkirk over at AccessVegas.com to create a one-of-a-kind meetup/happy hour for all the VEGAS VIDEO NETWORK viewers and Access Vegas readers (locals and tourists alike). Ted has outdone himself in that he’s arranged for us to host a very special "pre-Grand Opening Party" event at Nikki Beach, located at the Tropicana, which has just completed a $100 million makeover.

A full press release will follow, but here are the highlights:

  1. Date/Time: Thursday, APRIL 28th, 2011. 6PM – 9PM

  2. First TWO drinks are on us!! By sending your RSVP to HappyHour@VegasVideoNetwork.com, you will be placed on the guest list and receive two free complimentary drinks.

  3. You MUST RSVP: To receive your two free drinks, you must RSVP separately for each person attending (no "so-and-so plus one"). This means each person in attendance will provide their email address. (No, we’re not going to sell your email address — Emails will be used to update and remind everyone coming of the date and late-breaking info.)

  4. Location: The brand new Nikki Beach and Cafe at the Tropicana Las Vegas. (This event is one week prior to the big Grand Opening!)

The event will be hosted by Access Vegas CEO Ted Newkirk and yours truly. Also in attendance will be your favorite hosts from all of the VEGAS VIDEO NETWORK programs (Living in Las Vegas, Pub Crawl, Golf & Other Fore-Letter Words, Awkward Silence, Let’s Bet!, and Getting REAL (Estate) in Vegas). Also in attendance will be hosts for two new shows that have not yet been publically announced. (Both are VERY well known here in Las Vegas.)

Looking forward to seeing everybody. PLEASE TELL A FRIEND and send your name and email address to HappyHour@VegasVideoNetwork.com. The new Nikki Beach looks amazing and a good time will be had by all!

With a bar tap of $551.87, a limo, and the singing of Kumbaya at an Irish pub I’d never heard of, the Living in Las Vegas Podcast Spring 2010 Meet Up was a rousing success!

Here are all the photos! (Thanks to Sally for your contribution!)

Let the Party Begin

The festivities started promptly at 6:30PM at Brio.  Jacob, Sally and Cheryl were the first to arrive and secure the area around the fire pit (our favorite spot).  Neil, Sarah, Melissa and I arrived via cab shortly thereafter. (None of that fashionably latest stuff for our listeners!) It seemed that within 30-45 minutes or so, all the revelers were in place.  Some decided to dine on Brio’s good food.  All decided to sip from the adult nectar of joy.

The conversation and drinks flowed easily from the beginning and went well into the night.  It was GREAT fun hanging out with all the folks who joined us.  EVERYBODY was having fun, talking, laughing, meeting new people, re-connecting with folks we hadn’t seen in years. . .good stuff.

Hey Bartender

And with good conversation, often there is good drink to be had as well.  In reviewing the bar tab, there was a wide variety of drinks being consumed during all the fun.  Here’s a list:

  • Captain and Diet
  • Bombay Sapphire Martini
  • Sangria
  • Corona
  • Bellini Martini
  • Wine (by the bottle!)
  • Mojito
  • Bacardi and Coke
  • Coors Light
  • Jack Daniels and Diet
  • Bombay Sapphire and Tonic
  • Bacardi Silver and Sierra Mist

(I leave it to your imagination which beverage was most consumed.  Interestingly, it appears I thought some form of flight was an option.)

Limousine Trip

So that we could drink without worrying about getting pulled over for a DUI, several of us decided to take a limo home.  As always, Presidential Limo delivered.  The car (super stretch) was great, there was champagne waiting, all the gals got roses and our driver Danny was outstanding.  Very classy.  Thanks Presidential Limo!  If you’re in the market for a limo in Las Vegas, give them a call. They’re fantastic!

When our limo pulled up outside Brio at 11PM, the party was still going strong! At this point in the evening, several of us felt we could go for something to eat, and continue with the fun a bit longer, so we decided to take advantage of our stylish transportation and had Danny take us to McMullan’s Irish Pub (on Tropicana).  I’d never been before, but David and Alicia recommended it.

On our way to McMullan’s, Neil was kind enough to pour all of us a bit of champagne.

From Italian (Brio) to Irish (McMullan)

Eleven of us ended up at McMullan’s.  We had a few more drinks but mostly chowed down.  (The Irish Nachos were as big as a bowling ball.)  We hung out there for a while and then decided to bring the evening to an end.

As we dropped off the last of our fellow limo riders, Melissa and I took the limo home and reflected on how much fun we had.

It was a great time.

Personally, I felt that I had connected with all these people more than ever before.

I felt love.

And when I think love, I want to sing.  While holding hands.  With lots of other people.  Which explains what’s below. I leave you with video proof of the love that was in the air.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present, Kumbaya:

For those of you who read this blog from outside of the Las Vegas area, you are missing out on a city-wide increase in energy that I’ve not seen since March of last year.  You feel it on the street corners, in the bars, and on The Strip.

What’s all the buzz about?

People of all ages are uber-excited about the upcoming Living in Las Vegas Spring 2010 Meet Up!!

[queue thunderous applause]

In three short days, the who’s who of podcast listeners will gather at Brio in Town Square at 6:30PM to share stories and libations, meet new friends, and bask in the light that is magically created when we gather to celebrate this groovy little podcast.

“Who is going to be there, Scott?”

Just the coolest people evah!  Here’s some of the folks that have already RSVP’d:

  • Scott (Hey, that’s me!)
  • Melissa (Naughty Jelly Sweet)
  • Jacob (Blogs on the LiLV site with me)
  • Sally  (Wife of he who is Jacob and photographer of the stars)
  • Neil (from the UK(!) – LiLV is International Baby!!)
  • Sarah (from the UK(!) – wife of Neil and Melissa-level shopper)
  • Cheryl (Ph.D in smart podcast listening (and other stuff I can’t explain))
  • David (Listener Email theme? He wrote that.  Did our new logo, too.)
  • Alicia (Groovy gal, wife of David, and owes me chocolate)
  • Malya (not a vampire, muy funero)
  • Ira (new listener, often emailer, new in town)
  • Ted (AccessVegas.com bossman, Las Vegas insider)
  • Oprah (Not really, just checking to see if you’re really reading this)
  • Maria (Recognized Melissa whilst shopping! How cool is that?)
  • Ron (Best stylist in Las Vegas)

Are you coming?  Let me know!! Just click meetup@livinginlv.com and tell me you’ll be there!  If I already know you, I’ll add you to the list above, along with an insightful parenthetical comment.  And if I don’t know you, I’ll add you to our list, along with a less-then-insightful parenthetical comment.  Either way, you’ll be famous!  And your Ma and Pa will think you’re swell.

By the way, If you don’t live in Las Vegas but will BE HERE this Saturday, you should come by and say HI!!  Much fun will be had.  And you could probably use a break from your mind-numbing gambling loss.  (Thanks for that, however.  Our taxes are low ‘cause of great people like you!)

As a reminder, here’s the details:

LOCATION: Brio Restaurant, Town Square (South Las Vegas Blvd, by Fry’s)

See you on Saturday!!!  Come have some fun and bring a friend!

p.s. Mark G. from Georgia, who won our deer naming content, has asked that I take his winnings and transfer them to a Meet Up attendee.  So, I will buy the third person to arrive a drink – further proof that our listeners are all about giving.

It’s been WAY TOO LONG since we had our last official Listener Meet Up.  This travesty must be resolved!  Our first Meet Up was a thrill for us, and each subsequent gathering has been a kick as well.

So why the drought?

No (good) reason, I’m afraid.  Melissa and I are busy folks but that’s no excuse for not creating an excuse to meet up with groovy folks like yourself!

Details will follow, but I wanted to put this date out there now.  The plan is to have our Living in Las Vegas Podcast Spring Meet Up on SATURDAY, April 24th, 2010.

Time and location are to be determined.  If you have a suggestion, PLEASE let me know.

Melissa and I are looking forward to sipping a joyful beverage and hanging out with the greatest people on this earth.  In the meantime, why don’t we all hang out? (Those great people are so hard to talk to.)

LOCATION: Brio Restaurant, Town Square (South Las Vegas Blvd, by Fry’s)

Here’s a quicky video I took when Melissa and I met a few friends downtown for dinner, drinks and live comedy.  This video is from Firefly, which is located within the Plaza Hotel and Casino.  As you’ll see, they’ve got a GREAT view of Fremont Street.

Christmas Gathering

Last weekend Melissa and I had a GREAT time joining a bunch of friends we’ve made via the LiLV Podcast for dinner and drinks at Buca Di Beppo, on Lake Mead Blvd.  Besides enjoying the company of Jacob, Sally, Alicia, David, Cheryl, Brad, Sally, Kerry and Perry, we were joined by the Pope himself.

Hard to beat that!

Afterwards, Melissa, David, Alicia and I headed down to Frankie’s Tiki Room

I’ve included a link to some photos I’ve uploaded on Picasa.  (Some of those Frankie’s photos did not make it online.  Yikes!)

Merry Christmas to all!

Last Tuesday, I sent an email to all the subscribers of the Living in Las Vegas Podcast email list asking for a recommendation.

The reason?

The Living in Las Vegas Podcast Virtual Video Meetup beta test we ran last Friday was a success(!) and as a result, I wanted to get our list member’s suggestions regarding a good day/time combo for our upcoming series of LiLV Virtual Video Meetups.

About 10% of those who read the email responded and I wanted to both share the top day/time combos along with asking for your comments.  Because we see this as a great way to keep in touch with our listeners PLUS a groovy way to introduce our listeners to each other, please take a moment and give us your thoughts on the matter!  Thank you in advance!

In analyzing the responses (Excel to the rescue!), here’s the top 5 most popular day/time combos:

1. FRIDAY at 5PM Pacific, tied with #2

I may have influenced this as it was the example I gave in the email.

2. MONDAY at 8PM Pacific

This had the same number of votes as Friday/5pm.  My concern here is for the EST folks.

Several comments suggesting a mid-week break from the daily grind.

4. SATURDAY at 9AM Pacific

Starting off the weekend right!  Would also give our many European listeners a chance to play along.

5. FRIDAY at 8PM Pacific

Starting off the weekend early!

What do you think?  Please take a moment right now and add a comment to the website.

Thanks again!

Scott, are you planning a listener meetup any time soon?  We’re going to be in Las Vegas next week, and would love to meet other listeners to your show!”

From time to time, I get an email like the one above.  Melissa and I think it’s great that listeners to the show are interested in getting together, like we’ve done in previous meetups.  And while there’s nothing like seeing folks in person, there’s still many more people who’d like to attend but are unable to because their either busy, out of town, or not Las Vegas locals.

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to create a Virtual Video Meetup—where any of our listeners could join in for free, regardless of their location, and have some fun talking among each other.

After some preliminary testing, I think I’ve created such an environment on the Living in Las Vegas Podcast website!

If you look on the Home Page of the Living in Las Vegas Podcast website, you’ll see a new graphic in the right-side column.  It takes you to our brand new LiLV LIVE VIDEO CHAT Room!  In it, we all can:

  1. Host an unlimited number of participants
  2. See and hear up to 12 Live Video Feeds from those participating in the meetup.
  3. Add content to the real-time textual chat window
  4. Engage in private text-chats with any participant

In our preliminary testing, we had five video feeds running at one time.  I’d like to push that a bit farther this evening, if you’re up for it!  So tonight I’m going to run a “beta” test of our new webpage: http://www.LivingInLV.com/VideoChat

Tonight at 5:30pm Pacific, you are invited to test out our new Live Video Chat Room.  I’ll be there with a lovely beverage hoping to talk with listeners from all over the place.  If you have a camera and microphone, come join the fun.  And even if you don’t, stop by anyways.  We had fun during our testing talking with people who just used the chat window provided for all participants.

Date: Today (11/13/09)
Time: 5:30pm Pacific
Where: http://www.LivingInLV.com/VideoChat
Why? Because I’m all about the Kumbaya, my friend!

Hope to see you tonight!

Good food.  Good drink.  Good folks.  Mediocre baseball.

Ah, I love this town.

Time: 6:30pm
